Optima 2000 – Any good?
We recently got our hands on the Optima 2000, a new VHF radio that promises crystal-clear communication, long battery life, and rugged design. But does it live up to the hype?
First Impressions
Right out of the box, the Optima 2000 feels solid. It’s got a sturdy build with rubberized edges, a bright LCD display, and tactile buttons that respond well even with gloves on. The antenna feels robust, and the waterproof rating (IPX7) suggests it can handle a splash or two.
Performance at Sea
We tested the Optima 2000 aboard a small vessel just outside Stavanger. Conditions were windy with moderate swell — perfect for a stress test.
Clarity: Audio was clear up to 10 nautical miles. Beyond that, we noticed a slight drop in clarity, but it still remained understandable.
Battery Life: We got nearly 20 hours of use on a full charge with intermittent transmissions.
Range: In open water, the Optima 2000 maintained a stable connection up to 18 nautical miles with a fixed antenna setup.
Menu & Usability: Menus were intuitive, and the backlight was readable in both bright sun and low light.
Downsides
The speaker distorts slightly at max volume.
Charging cable is proprietary — a standard USB-C port would’ve been more convenient.
Verdict
For its price range, the Optima 2000 delivers impressive performance and reliability. It’s not perfect, but it punches above its weight.
